Though it’s been quite a while since I visited this place Geoje island, but writing anything about it just never happened. We actually visited at a friends’ house there. Sadly they are leaving Korea, and moving back to Singapore. Two days ago, while meeting them for the last time reminded of the fact that I never really wrote anything about the nice time I had there. So, here I am writing finally! If you want to know about Geoje Island and which places to visit there, please continue reading!
Geojedo or Geoje Island situated at the southern part of Korea, is the second largest island in Korea after Jeju or jejudo. I guess you understand that do is the Korean word for island. Geoje is known as Blue city of Korea, probably because of all the sea sides and an island in the middle. There was a time when people had to cross by ferry to go to Geoje Island but luckily from December 2010, Busan-Geoje Fixed Link is opened and provides a more direct connection to the city of Busan.
Geojedo Island is historically a significant place. Memorial services are held annually in memory of General Lee Sun-Shin at the Okpodaecheop (war) Memorial Park, built in memory of the battle of Okpo(1592.5.7 – 5.8). Geojedo Island also had the biggest prisoner-of-war camp during the Korean War, and the camp has been restored as a historical relics site.
POW camp was the first place we went. Our friend had a car, so transportation or how to get there was not a big deal for us. But when you go to a new city in Korea, you will often see small tourism office near bus station or train station. Just pick a map from there, and go find your place! Also, if you ask any person in that office for direction, they would surely help you out! Anyways, in POW camp they tried to create a vision of what happened there with little sculptures, lighting, paintings. They even contain some of the remaining things from the war like tanks, planes etc.
Next, we went to Hakdong pebble beach and then to Windy hill. I don’t have much pictures of these two, cause I kinda got sick during these times. Sorry for that. 😥
Hakdong Mongdol Beach, made of pebbles called Mongdol, has camellias and fairy pits in spring, and comes alive as a beach resort in summer. Windy Hill is a hill covered in grass and overlooking the sea. A growing number visitors come to the place after it was used a filming site for popular Korean dramas such as Eve’s Garden (2003, SBS) and Merry- Go-Round (2004, MBC). The name “Windy Hill” was given by those who visited the island and became a fan. Walking toward the hill along the wooden promenade from the wharf, one can see Hakdong Village from a distance.
Both of this place is so peaceful! Beside the sea, full of natural beauty, and cool breezes, one of those places to enjoy with your loved ones! I just wish I wouldn’t get sick and enjoyed a little more then!
And the best for the last, Oedo Island!!
Oedo-Botania is a marine botanical garden located in Hallyeo Maritime National Park, which has a beautiful view of the crystal blue South Sea and surrounding landscape. It is 4 kilometers away from Geojedo Island. About 20 minutes by ship from Gujora Port, past Naedo Island lies the European-like Oedo Island. In 1969, Lee Chang-ho first came to this island to escape from the wind and waves as he was fishing. He and his wife created this breathtaking landscape with all the care for 30 years.
In April, the island is covered with a plethora of flowers. The Venus Garden displays twelve sculptures and a western-style garden. At Paradise Lounge, one can enjoy the sunshine and the sea while drinking beverages. Camellias and various kinds of rare flowers from all over the world can be found in Oedo. When coming down the ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ visitors can view the beautiful garden and the ocean in the background. Magnificent terrace landscaping line both sides of the stairway. Oedo Paradise Island is without a doubt, a true paradise.
Oedo island is the most beautiful garden I ever saw, and I want it to stay that way! The most amazing experience was crossing the sea with a boat! You will see endless beauty of sea and the sun is shining just above your head, and once again you will realize life is beautiful! The boat driver was very generous, he allowed us to go and watch the sea closely from the deck. And that’s how we took these pictures. Just a suggestion here, visit with your partner and hold each others hands while standing on the deck, which is simultaneously safe and romantic, and of course because this beauty is even more beautiful when you have someone to share with. The place is a little crowded, and the boat comes at certain interval only, so make sure to keep tracks of time as well as take a whole tour of the place without spending much times on taking pictures or etc.
As I mentioned before, we went to a friends’ house, so we didn’t need to worry about accommodation, but if you are just a tourist, check Visit Korea site here: ( http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/index.jsp ), they have some lists of hotel for every place in Korea.
Hope you enjoyed the post! Let me know of your thoughts!
